Slate Plus (GL-A1300) is a compact travel VPN router built on a quad-core Qualcomm IPQ4018 processor optimized specifically for efficient traffic encryption. Palm-sized (118 × 84 × 33 mm, 181 g), it supports dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi — 400 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band and 867 Mbps in the 5 GHz band — and delivers WireGuard at around 170 Mbps, three times faster than the previous Slate generation. It’s a reliable choice for anyone who needs a secure VPN on the road, where privacy, cybersecurity and a self-contained solution matter.
Internet connectivity
The Slate Plus gets internet three ways: through the gigabit WAN port, through a USB modem, or by connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network in repeater mode. Repeater mode scans and connects to both open and hidden SSIDs — handy when you’re on public Wi-Fi in a café, an airport, a rented apartment or an office: your devices connect to the Slate Plus, and it routes all traffic through the secure tunnel. Three gigabit Ethernet ports (1 WAN + 2 LAN) let you connect a laptop, an IP camera or another wired device directly.
VPN and encryption
The router supports WireGuard (real-world speed around 170 Mbps) and OpenVPN (around 28 Mbps); both protocols run in client and server modes. The Slate Plus is compatible with 30+ commercial VPN services and can act as a VPN server, routing traffic from remote devices back to your home network through an encrypted tunnel. For the best compatibility, speed and privacy protection, we recommend GemiGuard VPN. The VPN runs at the router level, so all connected devices automatically reach the internet through the secure tunnel — without installing a separate client on each device. A policy routing feature is also available, letting you selectively route the traffic of specific devices through the VPN or around it.
Power and mobility
The Slate Plus is powered via USB Type-C (5 V / 3 A) and draws less than 6.5 W. Besides the bundled power supply, it runs from most power banks and USB adapters — you can deploy a secure network anywhere in minutes. The two external dual-band antennas fold down, and the 181 g body slips easily into a pocket or travel bag.
Privacy and cybersecurity with GemiGuard Mirage
The GemiGuard Mirage package is available for the Slate Plus — our software solution for enhancing the privacy and cybersecurity of GL.iNet devices. Mirage for the GL-A1300 includes: BSSID randomization, MAC address randomization, automatic clearing of system logs, removal of connected Wi-Fi client history and hardened encrypted DNS. These features reduce the device’s digital footprint and protect user privacy.
Slate Plus vs GL.iNet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) — which model to choose?
Both models are compact travel VPN routers powered via USB Type-C and able to run from a power bank, with three gigabit Ethernet ports (1 WAN + 2 LAN) and a USB 3.0 port. The difference is in the Wi-Fi class and VPN speed. The Slate Plus (GL-A1300) is built on a Qualcomm IPQ4018 processor (717 MHz) with 256 MB of memory, supports 802.11ac (400 + 867 Mbps) and WireGuard at around 170 Mbps — the most affordable efficient VPN router for travel. The Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) is a newer generation: a quad-core Qualcomm IPQ6000 (1.2 GHz), 512 MB of memory, 802.11ax (600 + 1200 Mbps), hardware-accelerated WireGuard up to ~500 Mbps and a MicroSD slot. If you need the most affordable secure router for the road — choose the Slate Plus. If higher Wi-Fi and VPN speeds matter — choose the Slate AX.
Network features and protection
The Slate Plus supports encrypted DNS to protect DNS queries from interception, the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, and a built-in firewall with port forwarding, port opening and DMZ. The device is equipped with three gigabit Ethernet ports (1 WAN + 2 LAN) and a USB 3.0 Type-A port — you can attach an external USB drive and deploy a file server via Samba or WebDAV to store and share files across the local network. The Slate Plus works in several modes: router, access point (AP), extender (repeater), wireless or wired bridge — allowing flexible integration into any existing network.
802.11ac and device connectivity
The Slate Plus supports dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi with a combined speed of up to 1267 Mbps — 400 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band and 867 Mbps in the 5 GHz band. The two external 2.4 + 5 GHz antennas provide stable coverage, and the 5 GHz band leaves headroom for video streaming and video calls. Dozens of Wi-Fi clients and wired devices can be connected to the device at once.
