A high-performance compact VPN router built on the latest IEEE 802.11be standard, designed to set up a secure network at home, in the office or in remote environments. Slate 7 is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm processor clocked at 1.1 GHz, equipped with 1 GB of DDR4 RAM and 512 MB of flash storage, and delivers Wi-Fi speeds of up to 688 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band and up to 2882 Mbps in the 5 GHz band. The device supports WireGuard and OpenVPN, is compatible with most commercial VPN services, and lets you protect all network traffic at the router level — without the need to install a VPN client on every individual device.
IEEE 802.11be and connectivity
Slate 7 runs on the IEEE 802.11be standard with support for OFDMA, 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), ensuring a stable connection with minimal latency even when a large number of devices are connected at the same time. The router receives internet through the 2.5G Ethernet WAN port, over a wireless connection to an existing Wi-Fi network (repeater mode), or via USB tethering from a smartphone — giving you flexibility in choosing the internet source depending on the situation.
VPN and traffic encryption
The router supports two VPN protocols — WireGuard (real-world speed ~450 Mbps) and OpenVPN with DCO support (~350 Mbps). These are some of the highest VPN speed figures among compact routers on the market. Once the VPN service is configured, all traffic from every device on the network automatically passes through the encrypted tunnel. For the best compatibility, speed and privacy protection we recommend GemiGuard VPN.
Touchscreen
A standout feature of Slate 7 is its built-in touchscreen display, which provides convenient access to the router’s core functions without logging into the web admin panel. The screen shows the current status of the VPN connection with the ability to turn the VPN on and off, switch between configured VPN providers, a QR code for quickly connecting to the Wi-Fi network, and internet connection status indicators. This is especially handy when you need to quickly share network access with other users or check connection status without any extra steps.
Power and portability
Slate 7 is powered via USB Type-C with PD (Power Delivery) support — compatible with 5 V / 3 A, 9 V / 3 A and 12 V / 2.5 A power sources. Power consumption is 4.5 W with no load on the USB port. The device also runs from a power bank, allowing it to be used away from home or the office — in a cafe, coworking space or any other location without constant access to a power outlet.
Privacy and cybersecurity with GemiGuard Mirage
The GemiGuard Mirage package is available for Slate 7 — GemiGuard’s software solution for enhancing the privacy, anonymity and cybersecurity of GL.iNet devices. Mirage for the GL-BE3600 includes: BSSID randomization, MAC address randomization, automatic clearing of system logs, removal of connected Wi-Fi client history, hardened encrypted DNS and other security improvements. These features significantly reduce the device’s digital footprint and protect user privacy.
Slate 7 vs GL.iNet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) — which model to choose?
Customers often compare these two models. Slate AX is the more economical choice and a better value-for-capabilities option, as well as a popular pick for most users. Slate AX has three Ethernet ports (1 WAN + 2 LAN) versus two on the Slate 7, higher real-world WireGuard VPN speed (~500 Mbps versus ~450 Mbps on the Slate 7), and also consumes less power. Slate 7, in turn, offers the IEEE 802.11be standard instead of IEEE 802.11ax, two 2.5G Ethernet ports (instead of the gigabit ones on the Slate AX), more RAM (1 GB versus 512 MB), a more powerful quad-core processor and a touchscreen for quickly managing the VPN connection and network connectivity. If you need a reliable compact VPN router at a more affordable price and two LAN ports — Slate AX is an excellent choice. If your priority is IEEE 802.11be, faster Ethernet ports and a touchscreen display — Slate 7 is the way to go.
Network features and protection
Slate 7 supports WPA3 encryption, encrypted DNS (DNS over TLS), the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, as well as a built-in firewall with support for port forwarding, port opening and DMZ. The device is equipped with one WAN and one LAN 2.5G Ethernet port (10/100/1000/2500 Mbps), a USB 3.0 port for external storage and two foldable external antennas. The router operates in several modes: classic router, access point (AP), wireless or wired bridge — allowing it to be integrated into any existing network.
